Upcoming Board of Education Meetings
Two meetings this week for the SFUSD Board of Education. Monday is the Curriculum and Program Committee meeting and Tuesday is a regular Board of Education meeting.
Augmented Curriculum and Program Committee Meeting: Monday November 13 @ 6PM in the Board Room
Agenda for the meeting here
Topics to be discussed:
Resolution 1710-10A1 - In Support of Reducing SFUSD Assessments, proposed by Commissioners Sanchez and Cook.
Text of the resolution is here
The resolution would seek to make some or all formative assessments (like Fountas and Pinnell reading assessments, math milestone assessments, and Integrated Writing Assessments) optional for teachers.
The resolution also provides that SFUSD may not use assessments to evaluate educators and that adequate substitute coverage must be provided to enable teachers to administer one-on-one assessments like Fountas and Pinnell.
This resolution would not change state mandated testing like SBAC.
The board will hear an informational update on admissions at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.
There will also be an informational update on new teacher onboarding practices.
Regular Board of Education Meeting: Tuesday November 14 @ 6PM in the Board Room.
Agenda for the meeting here
Topics to be discussed:
- The Student Advisory Council and Parent Advisory Council (PAC) will make reports to the Board of Education
- The Board of Education will vote on several proposed resolutions tonight. There is time for public comment on each resolution before the board votes. The resolutions include:
- A proposal to approve a new charter petition for a KIPP elementary school in the Bayview district.
- SFUSD Staff have recommended that this petition be DENIED. The resolution and details of the staff recommendation are here.
- A proposal to approve a new charter petition for a KIPP elementary school in the Bayview district.
- A proposal to renew the charter for KIPP San Francisco College Prep Charter School
- SFUSD staff recommend approval of the renewal petition for 5 years. Board committees forwarded the resolution to the full board without a recommendation (not for or against). You can see the resolution and the staff recommendation here.
- The Board will vote on a resolution that would revise Board Policy 5101 on student assignment to extend indefinitely the high school enrollment priority for students who attend Willie Brown MS for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. More information here.
- The board will vote on several proposed board policy updates related to: rights of students with Section 504 plans, processes for families to appeal expulsion decisions, the policy that prohibit student fees, deposits or other charges for participation certain educational activities, and requirements for public reporting on approved contracts of management employees.
- Superintendent Matthews will provide a 90 day report on observations and findings from the many meetings and listening sessions he has held since taking on the role of SFUSD superintendent. This will likely include an initial plan. Here is an outline of the stated goals and structure of the superintendent's first 90 days.
Public Comment
There is always an opportunity for public comment at school board meetings. At committee meetings public comment does not typically require advance sign up. The committee chair will call for public comment on a particular topic before commissioners begin discussion of the topic. Members of the public interested in speaking simply approach the podium when called. Speakers are typically allowed two minutes to address the board, but time given may be shorter if there are a large number of speakers.

You can access recordings of regular and committee meetings.
Video recordings of regular meetings (not available for committee meetings)
