Latino Parent Club Member Finds Affordable Housing Thanks to PPS-SF/MEDA Workshop
This happy story highlights the one-on-one engagement that often happens between PPS-SF staff members and the families in our network.
A participant in our Latino Parent Leadership Club recently "won the lottery" as the result of information shared via partnership between PPS-SF and Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA). The parent qualified for and was selected from a lottery for a two bedroom apartment in a new Abaca affordable housing development.
Thanks to a collaborative effort between Dairo Romero of MEDA and Daisy Hernandez of PPS-SF, parents who attended a Latino Parent Leadership Club meeting learned about Abaca and other affordable housing opportunities that are available through the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD).
MOHCD has launched a more streamlined and technology-supported system to discover and apply for affordable housing. It's called DAHLIA, which stands for Database of Affordable Housing Listings, Information, and Applications.
PPS-SF invited MEDA to attend the Parent Club meeting to inform families of affordable housing opportunities and how to navigate the new process. Maria Barrera's family participated in and won the lottery. They now have an affordable two-bedroom apartment that is a welcome fit for their two children who attend public schools.
You can learn more about affordable housing opportunities through MEDA on their website.
The PPS-SF Latino Parent Leadership Club meets at various sites in the Mission, Visitacion Valley, and the Bayview. For more information on meetings and how to join please email Daisy Hernandez at daisy@ppssf.org.
