Meet our current AmeriCorps VISTA member Kiara Quintanar who was named April’s “Member of the Month!”
Kiara is the first AmeriCorps VISTA member hired by PPS-SF and we feel incredibly fortunate to have her on our team!
We asked her a few questions about her experience as a VISTA.
What is one of your favorite things about working at PPS-SF?
Definitely the PPS-SF staff and community we work with! This has been my first full-time position and I have been overwhelmed by how welcoming, supportive, and collaborative the team is. We serve and work with such a diverse community that it is inspiring to experience the thread that connects so many across the City: believing in the power and necessity of strong public schools!
What is something you have learned from your experience?
One of the biggest things I will take away from my time at PPS-SF is that you do not need a big team to make a difference. We are a team of 10 and this organization supports thousands of families every year, many of which are one-on-one interactions, on various platforms. If a team, no matter the size, is committed and hardworking, impacts will be made. Seeing this in action is extremely motivating, especially for those passionate about social justice issues.
What would you tell someone thinking about serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA?
Americorps VISTA is a great way to explore after graduation. If you are like me, unsure of what path to take, a year of service that includes structure and support, as well as benefits, is a perfect way to enter into the workforce. Through PPS-SF I have also been exposed to many different organizations and sectors that we collaborate with which has given me a greater sense of the different ways to pursue passions.
