Inclusive Schools Week is December 6th - 10th, 2021!

This December join SFUSD school sites across the district in celebrating Inclusive Schools Week. Since the pandemic started we have been dealing with separation, isolation, and loss.  This has been especially true for students with disabilities and their families.  While many of us were able to return to in-person learning this fall, we are still in the process of teaching, learning, and supporting one another under ever-changing circumstances.  This year, the theme for Inclusive Schools Week is “Rebuilding Our Inclusive Community Together.”  We have a unique opportunity to reimagine how we can direct our talent, time, and energy to strengthen our commitment to inclusive education.  It is an exciting time for restoring and rebuilding a shared community of learners, educators, and leaders.

Inclusive Schools Week provides an opportunity for SFUSD educators and community members to consider how we design and implement inclusive practices into all aspects of our engagement.  We have a strong foundation of successes to build on, and the work will continue to evolve.  What will rebuilding look like?  What plans, tools and resources will be necessary to take inclusion to the next level of student success?  How will we engage students, families, educators, and the community to create a design that benefits all?  This year, SFUSD has a number of exciting events planned to celebrate Inclusive Schools Week including an online art showcase, a student-focused discussion panel, a 49ers Workout hosted with Special Olympics, and various special education trainings that will be available to staff, students and families.

If you are not a special education parent, offer to be an ally.  Being a special education parent can be an isolating experience. Knowing that there are others out there who are allies, willing to lend a hand is a good thing.

How to Get Involved

Check-in with your student, teachers or school staff to see what activities are planned for Inclusive Schools Week at your child’s school.

Think about students and families who might be marginalized at your school and consider ways in which they can be supported and more fully included in your community.

Online Art Showcase

This showcase is open to all students to share what rebuilding our inclusive community looks and feels like for them.  It can be related to their disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference or other unique trait they would like to share.

The showcase will be displayed on a public website and will include multiple forms of media including photos, audio files and video clips.  Submissions are due no later than Friday, December 10, 2021 and can be sent via this Google Form.

Student Panel

On Thursday, December 9 from 6-8pm a student panel will be hosted via Zoom.  This will be an opportunity for a panel of young adults to share their special education journey, as well as discuss their experiences as a whole person, not just as a student with a disability.  For more information about the panel visit sfusd.edu/sped-isw or cacspedsf.com

Special Olympics Virtual Assemblies & 49ers Workout

Once again, the SFUSD Physical Education Department is partnering with Special Olympics to celebrate Inclusive Schools Week. Special Olympics will be collaborating with the 49ers to lead a virtual workout on Monday, December 6 from 4-5pm.  If you would like to participate, please sign up here.
