Women's History Month Events
Happy Women’s History Month! The pandemic has high-lighted many of the struggles that usually happen to women during times of crisis: job loss, wage loss, and increased work loads, just to name a few. Women’s experiences are as different as all women are, there is no single story or monolith. Below are some virtual events to add to your calendar.
March 8-19, nightly installments at 7 PM PST. Canta Brava: Performance Series Celebrating Women in History
Join us during the month of March as we commemorate and celebrate the vital role of womxn in history. Each evening, from March 8, 2021 at 7pm (PST) through March 19, 2021, Canta Brava will feature the unique artistry and energies of some of our favorite artists as they pay tribute to the womxn who have inspired them. Performances include spoken word, poetry, music and monologues that will be posted to Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube. Learn more at the Brava website here.
Monday, March 15, 4-5:30 PM. Workshop: Introduction to Drawing Real vs Manga Faces with Karen Luk
Learn how to draw the front, side and three-quarter views of realistic and manga style face in general proportions. Bring your ideas to share your story and drawing questions for Karen Luk to answer after the drawing demonstration. Space limited. For kids 8 and older. Learn more and register here.
Monday, March 15, 7-8:15PM. Workshop: Know Your Name with Ali Blum, Artist
In this workshop artist Ali Blum will lead you in a series of prompts to explore self care and encourage reflection, mediation, relaxation and play. Through many different prompts you will gather ideas to write, draw, collage, paint and however else you are moved to write a letter to yourself. This letter may be words, numbers, drawings, or a combination of all. It is in the process of making that self care and reflection will bloom. Learn more and register here.

San Francisco Public Library is honored to announce its 16th Annual One City One Book selection, Chanel Miller’s, Know My Name. Chanel Miller will join Robynn Takayama for a candid conversation about her book, art and her personal experience with sexual trauma and the CA court system. Zoom doors will open at 5:50. Thursday, March 25, 5:30-7PM. What’s Your Story – A Celebration for Women’s History Month with Rebecca Walker, Lily Diamond and Ericka Huggins
Jumping off from their new book, What’s Your Story:A Journal for Everyday Evolution, which prompts transformational writing for personal, social and global change, Rebecca Walker and Lily Diamond will engage with Oakland Black Panther member, political activist and poet Ericka Huggins. There are many influences and role models that can change our sense of self, our values and the directions we take. Join this candid conversation with three dynamic change makers. Audience members will be asked to submit on CHAT the names and contributions of inspiring women who have been lost or looked over that they would like to bring forth and acknowledge for Women’s History Month.
