Parent Ambassador Makes A Difference
The Parent Ambassador Program is aimed at helping parents get a better understanding of the schools in the SFUSD – there are 72 elementary schools in the district and that can be overwhelming and time-consuming when trying to figure out what school or program best fits your families' educational needs.
Our Parent Ambassadors are public school parents who have volunteered to speak to other parents about their child's school. It can be incredibly helpful to get the perspective of a fellow parent when it comes to education and schools.
We have interviewed one of our very own Parent Ambassadors, Curtis Stankalis on why he chose to become a Parent Ambassador and what he has done during his time volunteering:
Can you please describe for me the Parent Ambassador Program? What are the goals?
To help parents choose a school for their child.
Were you a parent ambassador? If so, what was that experience like for you?
I was not in one in the past, but my wife was for a few years. She liked being one so much, I wanted to become one after volunteering in our daughter's school.
In your opinion, what is the best part of the parent ambassador program?
The gratification of helping parents and their children!
How does this program support the relationship with families and schools across San Francisco?
Helps families know more about perspective schools and gets them more involved with their children's schools
Why would parents want to be ambassadors? What is the incentive?
Ambassadors really like their children's schools and would like to be the parental representative of the school.
Can you recall a time that was particularly moving or unique either as a parent ambassador or from the outside looking in?
A few parents my wife spoke to about our school ended up attending the school and one became involved in the School Site Council (SSC).
How can people get involved in the program?
My wife was asked by the principal, they can sign up at an event Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco host or though the newsletter!
What are your hopes for the program moving forward?
For the program to have more support from the school district and to assist as many families as possible.
