Summary SFUSD Compensatory Education

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) Department of Education Frequently Asked Questions document is designed to help parents understand what happens if their child's special education services are missed due to teacher shortages.

Key things for parents to know:

Missed services: If your child's school has a teacher shortage, you'll get a Prior Written Notice (PWN). This explains how much instruction your child missed and offers make-up services.

Compensatory Education: This is extra help to make up for lost learning. The type and amount of extra help will depend on your child's needs. It might include tutoring, therapy, or other support services.

How to request?

To request Compensatory Education, email your child's special education case manager, principal, or special education supervisor. Explain why you think your child needs extra help and what kind of help would be best. Call the Special Education Office at (415) 759-2222 or the SFUSD Special Education Ombudsperson (martinj5@sfusd.edu or 415-447-7802) for further assistance.

Who pays: SFUSD staff will usually provide the extra help. Sometimes, private providers might be used, and SFUSD may reimburse you for those costs, depending on your situation. If you've already paid for private tutoring or services, it may be possible to get reimbursed, but this must be arranged beforehand via a PWN.

Disputes: If you disagree with the offer of Compensatory Education, talk to the person who sent you the PWN or contact your child's IEP team.

Time limits: You have two years from when the missed services happened to request Compensatory Education.

PWN (Prior Written Notice): This is an important document explaining SFUSD's offer of Compensatory Education. It details the missed services, the proposed make-up services, and how to access them. It is required by law.

This FAQ aims to clarify the process and help parents ensure their children receive the special education services they need. The document also provides contact information for additional support.
