PPS-SF Spring Break Staycation Guide
Spring Break is so close you can almost taste it! As things open up, we wanted to highlight a few events and activities that might make your staycation a little bit easier.
Saturday, March 27th: Children's Creativity Museum's Spring Saturdays, 10AM-2PM at the Leroy King Carousel, 221 4th Street.
Join Children’s Creativity Museum in Yerba Buena Gardens for our first Spring Saturday, a fun-filled outdoor experience this Saturday from 10:00 AM -2:00 PM in the Leroy King Carousel and Gardens courtyard. Enjoy our collaborative art activities, take-home creativity kits, and music for children provided by the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. We hope to see you and your family soon! Admission is free, however reserving tickets for the 30 minute time slot in which you and your guests would like to pick up your kit and participate in our collaborative activity will help us adhere to outdoor gathering regulations. Sunday, March 28th: Outer Sunset Farmers Market and Mercantile, Every Sunday at 9 am – 3 pm, 37th Avenue at Ortega.
Come eat, drink, shop, play, connect and be local at the Outer Sunset Farmers Market & Mercantile, a festive open-air, year-round weekly market featuring local farmers, ranchers, food artisans, merchants, makers, artists and organizations on a closed-to-traffic 37th Avenue between Ortega and Pacheco. Our open-air market will launch with a thoughtful and comprehensive COVID-19 safety plan. The plan will include guidelines, protocols, and a modified program of activities that will evolve along with this situation but will reflect at all times the goal of helping to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the community, vendors, and staff. Tuesday, March 30th: Family Art Workshop! Painting Rocks with the Museum of African Diaspora, 3:30-4:30 PM, virtually.
On Tuesday March 30th, we will be painting rocks collected from daily walks. Three designs will be demonstrated during the Zoom meeting, however it is not required to do any of the suggested designs. The goal of these are to encourage as much creativity as possible and the designs for anyone who would like to incorporate them into their rock art!
Crafts can be completed by all ages, however the recommended age range for this craft is 6-12 years old. This is meant to be a craft that the entire family can do, so an adult supervisor is required to attend, and highly encouraged to craft alongside the child. No artistic skill required! Wednesday, March 31st: Social Justice Signs with Alejandra and the San Francisco Public Library, 4-5PM, virtually
Learn about several women artivists and be inspired to send your own message in a colorful poster. For ages 10–18. Register, see the materials list, and learn more here.
Thursday, April 1st: After Dark Online: Transgender Day of Visibility with the Exploratorium, 7 PM, virtually.
Observed on March 31, Transgender Day of Visibility is an international day of awareness and celebration built from decades of activism in response to the intentional exclusion of transgender people and voices in our culture and discourse. Transgender experiences expand and challenge our often limited models of gender, sex, and identity. In this program, we highlight transgender individuals in STEAM fields, offer cultural and scientific context for transgender experiences, and celebrate the diversity of human expression. Friday, April 2nd: College Consultation Office Hours for Teens with the San Francisco Public Library, 4-6PM, virtually.
Ask questions about college, discuss post-secondary options and build goals for after high school and beyond. Space limited. For 9th–12th graders who live or attend school in San Francisco. To learn more and to register, click here.
Here’s a list of museums that are physically open and are financially accessible. Given COVID, many museums now require tickets to be obtained online ahead of attending. We highly recommend reading through the “Visit” section of each website so you can have the most enjoyable time possible.
The Asian Art Museum has free entrance on the first Sunday of the month, for April, it will be April 4th. Children 12 and under, SFUSD students, and essential workers also receive free admission. To learn more, click here and scroll down to admissions.
The Conservatory of Flowers has free general admission for visitors receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits). Free admission may be redeemed by presenting a valid EBT card upon entry. The SF Moma has free entrance for San Francisco residents with valid Medi-Cal, CalFresh, SNAP, or EBT cards. Present your benefits card as well as proof of San Francisco residency on the day of your visit. Each eligible guest can get up to four adult tickets total, including General Admission and special exhibitions. For visitor information, click here.
The de Young Museum has free entrance every Saturday to all residents of the nine Bay Area counties. Saturdays feature engaging art experiences for the entire family, including art making, gallery guides, and tours with discussion and sketching in the permanent galleries. The de Young also offers free general admission for essential workers — including emergency services, health care, grocery stores, city operations and maintenance, social services, public transit, and delivery services — to receive a $15 discount on tickets to special exhibitions, through December 2021.
