I attended public school-my kid will too.
I remember when I found out that I was going to be a parent. It was shocking, exciting, and overwhelming. One of the many thoughts I had and still do concerns my child’s education.
Although I am still in the early stages of parenting, I am constantly thinking about the impact of our current educational dilemma.
As someone whose educational career started in public school and set me up for the success I have achieved, it is important that my child also receives the very best of the public education system.
Pretty soon, but not soon enough, my child will be joining the crowds of children who prepare for the first day of school, as will I.
Now I have started preparing for that day and there are many questions and concerns that I am considering every day of my child’s development.
The current state of our public education system has forced me to take a deep look at the issues that are constantly highlighted in our public school system.
School Closures – There have been many school closures throughout our state over the last couple of years. How will this impact my child when it comes time for him to attend school? Will we have to trek further from our community so he can receive the education he deserves?
Teacher shortages – As someone who attended public schools, I remember my classes being no more than 20 students to a teacher. In recent years, we have seen teacher shortages and the impact on school classes and student success. Parents can only support teachers so much and our districts must ensure our teachers are being paid fairly and are supported. I often think about how this issue will impact my son’s academic career by the time he reaches the age to start school.
Parent Support – As a single mother, I already face challenges when navigating parenthood. I already have seen how public schools have lost many resources when it comes to supporting parents which ultimately sets up children for success. This is why community organizations are so important!
I urge all parents, first-time parents especially, to start investing in their child’s public education as soon as possible. Community organizations like Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco can help demystify policy, create equitable access for all, and ensure that parents always have a voice when it comes to their children's education. It is never too early!
