Let Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco Accompany You Through the Enrollment Process!
One of our most fundamental programs at Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco is our Strategic Equity Enrollment program. San Francisco is unique in there is open enrollment so that kids are not automatically assigned to their neighborhood school. With over 120 public schools in San Francisco, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) provides the gift of choosing what school your child attends. A child is interested in a specific subject like science, a multilingual environment, or it is easiest for the family if the school is located near their place of work. Sometimes the process can seem daunting but that is where we come in!
First off, let us break down the meaning of our Strategic Equity Enrollment program. At Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco, we believe it is a fundamental right for all children to achieve an equal education, no matter where they live, their culture, or their abilities. We utilize credible models of equality by implementing proven strategies of success in guiding families through the SFUSD enrollment process. Our vision is that equitable education leads to strong kids which leads to a strong city!
We would love to collaborate with you and the families you relate to, both personally and professionally within your communities. We offer workshops on navigating the SFUSD enrollment process, intending to help parents understand school programs, explain parents' rights in the enrollment process, and share the amazing highlights of school programs around the city. If the families you relate to primarily speak Spanish or Cantonese, we will have our presentation translated. In addition, if the group of families is large enough, we can also have a language interpreter available. We offer both virtual and in-person workshops where we can meet over Zoom or Microsoft Teams or come to your location in person.
Our team of experts is uniquely equipped with trustworthiness, relatability, and expertise to facilitate our workshops, which focus on navigating into and through the Tk-12 School System.
We will offer your families three workshops:
Countdown to Kindergarten, which focuses on navigating into the Tk-12 School System at the TK (Transitional Kindergarten) or Kindergarten grade level.
Middle Trailblazer, focused on the goals of middle school programs, making a choice that best fits your student during these years and supporting your student on their chosen school campus.
Raising High is focused on the specialty programs of SFUSD, including small schools, career education pathways, dual enrollment, and others, and helping them understand the enrollment requirement
Within each workshop, we provide an overview of public education in San Francisco, the benefits of their child having access to a public education rich with a diversity of cultures, as well as a diversity and caliber in programs of interest across grade levels and within the more than 120 public schools within SFUSD.
The reflection below from our Principal Community Development Associate, Thaliyah Miller, offers a personal experience of how Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco enjoys sharing our expertise with each family as we walk together through the SFUSD enrollment process.
“About a month ago, I attended my first Enrollment Fair at John O’Connell High School. That day was full of helping parents find different booths, working with other CBOs (community-based organizations), and being able to promote PPSSF (Parents for Public Schools San Francisco). I found myself talking to over 100 families and parents about enrolling at a TK or a traditional elementary school. While there, I saw parents invested in their children’s education. I was honored to connect with different parents about how they can apply to the school of their choice, the different resources each school offers, and just genuine conversations with parents. This experience allowed me to be confident and proud of the resources that we offer to families and students. Our resources are life-changing to parents who do not understand the SFUSD system. I am proud to be a part of a team that works endlessly to advocate and represent the communities we serve.”
These enrollment workshops also offer a chance for our team to get to know your families personally so that even down the road, or the next day, families can reach out to us for one-to-one support. We also encourage all our workshop participants to stay in touch with us, because we offer financial incentive programs for parents to earn while they are supporting their child’s school within the San Francisco Unified School District
