Standing with Immigrant Families: A Legacy of Hope and Action

“If we are to have a peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop of world perspective." of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, quote on a gray marble wall, with a shadow of an adult looking down to a child.

A message from our ED, Dr. Vanessa Marrero….

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. didn't just preach justice; he embodied it. He fought tirelessly against racism, championing the fundamental right to education and voting rights for all.  His legacy continues through the King Center, a beacon of hope, and it’s a legacy that resonates deeply with the struggles faced by our immigrant families today.  Dr. King would undoubtedly stand with them, his voice a powerful shield against injustice.

My heart goes out to all our immigrant families, during these uncertain and frightening times.  As new immigration laws spread fear and uncertainty, I want to assure the community: our families are not alone.  Parents for Public Schools is more than an organization; we are your community, a network of parents who care deeply about your well-being and your children's future.  What makes us strong is we stand with together, shoulder to shoulder, and pledge to protect your access to a safe, inclusive, and supportive education.  We will provide guidance, resources, and a safe haven where your voices are heard and valued. Together, we will face these challenges with courage, strength, and unwavering hope.

Here in California, we find strength in our leaders’ commitment. Attorney General Rob Bonta and Governor Gavin Newsom have unequivocally affirmed their dedication to protecting our immigrant communities.  AG Bonta’s clear directive to schools, libraries, and hospitals emphasizes their responsibility to serve our most vulnerable students.

Let's be clear:  National laws, enshrined within the U.S. Constitution and civil rights legislation, guarantee every child's right to a free and equal education—regardless of national origin or immigration status. Schools cannot inquire about a child's immigration status and must provide equal access to all programs and services.

Remember this: parents are not just numbers in a system; you are cherished members of our family. We are here for you and your loved ones, every step of the way.

We're actively working to ensure your rights are upheld. We’ve shared crucial information about your rights to public education with community leaders, school districts, and across our social media channels.  We've engaged directly with Superintendent Su at SFUSD to strategize ways to keep our children safe and collaborated with the San Francisco Rights Commission on Immigrant Communities. We're also distributing Red Cards to empower families to assert their rights and protect themselves.

The path ahead may be uncertain, but our commitment to immigrant families remains unwavering. As we reflect on Dr. King's legacy of courage and perseverance, let us draw strength from his example. The fight for justice is ongoing, and the path towards equity is paved with challenges. But with unwavering commitment, compassion, and collective action, we can build a better future for our children and honor the spirit of those who fought before us.

My Best to you all,

Vanessa
