Topics discussed included:

  • A report from the Migrant Education Program, including impacts of COVID on migrant families in SFUSD.

  • A long discussion around an appointment to the Parent Advisory Council, which ended in a decision to postpone the appointment until a more demographically representative slate of candidates is presented.

  • The resolution brought last week to address persistent racism at Lowell HS, in part by changing the admissions process, and also by creating a Community Coalition to define and oversee an equity audit and resulting action plan, as well as other actions. The resolution was adopted by the board.

  • Updates to the reopening plan for SFUSD schools, including

    • Update on testing, including the RFP for student/staff Covid testing that closes next week.

    • Some details about what hybrid instruction will look like (e.g, full days, at least 2 days per week), update on facilities (e.g. the Department of Public Health has completed inspections on all Wave 1 PK and Elementary schools, all other 2A sites actively preparing)

    • Diagrams of the proposed flow of students and classroom set-ups (classrooms must be “staged” for DPH walkthrough)

    • Progress on placement packets for Phase 2A students (done except for information pending the completion of bargaining like who the in-person teacher will be, schedule, etc.)

  • The board learned how James Lick Middle School is Celebrating Black History Month! Slides here. (Register for their “Forward Together” webinar on February 17.)

  • Staff presented an update on the Black Studies Resolution adopted by the Board of Education on 10/20/2020, including resources and current work, including a redesign of SFUSD’s Social Science/Humanities core curriculum to better infuse Black Studies and Ethnic Studies.
